Women’s Art
Pg. 66, question 8
This is a drawing done by my roommate Brooke, who is 20 years old. She decided to draw a picture of a man doing a "dance pose". When I analyzed her drawing, I noticed a few things. First that the drawing does not appear very realistic of a human being. The eyes and mouth are made out of shapes and not drawn realistically. The color choices for the skin and the facial features are not accurate of a human being. Also some of the features are not proportionate like the arms. I would guess that Brooke drawing would be placed between the symbol-making stage and the preadolescent stage. Brooke says that she learned to draw in early elementary school. Her earliest memories of drawing come from a journal that kept in school which she was required to draw pictures of daily experiences. She stopped drawing in high school but she still doodles in her notebooks to this day!
This drawing was done by my other roommate Anna, who is 21 years old. She told me she drew a picture of a man doing an "exercise pose". After Anna was finished drawing, I observed her drawing and noticed a few interesting things. Her drawing is more realistic and accurate of a human being as far as features and coloring. She even drew fascial hair and arm hair. Her drawing is a lot more detailed then Brookes. Something unique is that after both of them were done with their drawings, each of them decided to name their human beings and tell me what they were doing. Anna's drawing shows signs of all three stages the developmental process but is mostly on a level beyond the three stages. Anna told me that she learned to draw in early elementary school and took drawing classes. She has never stopped drawing and also is a doodler!! She enjoyed participating in this !
